Midwest Environmental Defense Center (MEDC) is a nonprofit environmental organization working to protect the land, air, and water resources of the upper Midwest through legal and regulatory advocacy.

MEDC has a growing membership base throughout the region, comprised of individuals concerned about the environment and public health and eager to support a tough, sophisticated organization that knows how to engage with polluters and regulators on it’s own terms.    We focus less on chasing grants, growing our staff, and conducting expensive media campaigns and more on creating demonstrable environmental improvements for our members and the general public.  For the time being we are an all-volunteer organization led by a Board of Directors and a team of student volunteers.

MEDC’s recent activities are listed in detail on our News page.   Currently our efforts are focused on these two broad areas:

  • Enforcement of environmental laws - We use the “citizen suit” provisions of federal laws like the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act to hold polluters accountable and to protect our members’ interests in a clean and healthy environment.
  • Administrative advocacy - regulators in Wisconsin and around the Midwest are threatening to undercut key environmental protections.  We participate in agency rulemakings and permitting decisions at the state and national levels to make sure environmental standards protect our air, water, and public health.
